My Attempt

This is a versatile store cupboard ingredient. As you can use this slow cooker chutney in a number of ways to add tangy, spicy fruitiness to a variety of dishes. From a simple cheese sandwich. Or fried eggs on toast. To roast chicken or pork.

The recipe from this Hamlyn slow cooker book had a long list of ingredients. I did replace the mangoes with fresh peaches, as I had them already. I also didn’t have the black mustard seeds, so I did this recipe without them.

Other than that, this chutney features pineapple, onions and ginger. As well as the usual Indian spices (cumin, coriander and turmeric). And made into a chutney with sugar and malt vinegar.

Slow Cooker Fiery Tropical Chutney Recipe Review

This is a very easy slow cooker chutney recipe. I made only half of quantites, to make enough for 2 x 375 g jars.

The end result was very delicious. However a little watery, and did not have the ‘jammy’ consistency as you’d expect from a chutney. This is probably because cooking a chutney on the hob, you would normally allow it to bubble away, letting the water from the fruit evaporate. Whilst when cooking in the slow cooker the water doesn’t escape.

So the taste was very good; fruity, hot and spicy. But the consistency not quite as it should be for a chutney.

Also the peaches worked well as a replacement for mangoes. As they have similar water content and texture to mangoes.

And lastly, I would probably would have liked to add more chillies. Than the amount stated in the recipe. But this maybe because the particular chillies I used were quite mild. So the resulting chutney wasn’t as fiery as I would have liked.

I cooked this Slow Cooker Fiery Tropical Chutney recipe in my Morphy Richards 3.5L Slow Cooker.
