About Me

I’m a home cook, that loves to eat good food, cooked from scratch. I cook for myself, my family and friends. As a fan of home cooked food, I try to cook balanced healthy meals. But they’ve got to be delicious and easy to do. One thing I don’t have time for is complicated cooking or faffing about in the kitchen!

So I’m always looking for shortcuts, methods or gadgets to make my cooking life simpler, faster but still healthy and tasty. Which is why I decided to buy a slow cooker.

About Slow Cooking

Whilst I have been making home-made meals and baking bread and cakes for many years now. I realised using a slow cooker for the first time, that this was a whole new way of cooking. Compared to what I was used to when cooking with an oven or hob.

There are a few rules to follow when using a slow cooker. For example, the amount of ingredients, the timings and the amount of liquid. These all have to be catered to the slow cooker that you are using.

I love slow and low cooking where you just throw stuff in the pot. Bung it in the oven and leave it to do its magic for a few hours. But you can’t just use your normal oven recipes in the slow cooker. You need to adjust it a little for it to work.

So, Why Use a Slow Cooker?

Here are just a few of the benefits I have found so far. Slow cookers are especially good for cooking pulses, cheaper cuts of meat, and some sauces. As they all require low temperatures and long cooking times. They also require even cooking, which you don’t get with an oven or hob. This is the benefit of using the slow cooker for such recipes.

Slow cooking is more energy efficient. As the cost of running a slow cooker is much less than preheating and cooking in an oven. Or cooking on the hob.

Plus, even a modest costing slow cooker is large enough to make 4-6 portions which is good for cooking for the family. Or batch cooking for the freezer.
