Morphy Richards Slow Cooker Review

Pros

  • The metal inner pot, means that you can brown meat in the same pot. Making it easy to make one-pot meals. And saves on the washing up. Plus you don’t lose any of the meat juices.
  • I particularly like the metal pot, as this also means you can make bread and cakes. Straight in the pot, and the metal non-stick pot allows you to not only get the bread or cake golden brown. But the non-stick surface allows for easy turn out.
  • Large enough to make main meals of 3 to 4 portions. But also big enough to make large quantities of side dishes. Such as red cabbage or mashed potatoes. Which is perfect for batch cooking. Where you can use what you need. And have enough leftovers to freeze.
  • The slow cooker is simple to use. With straight forward instructions in the manual.
  • The non-stick pot means is it also easy to wash up. And without the need to use crock pot liners.
  • Even cooking with this model, means you don’t need to rotate the pot. Like you do with some older slow cookers. This means for most recipes, it’s easy to just switch on and leave it to do the cooking. With no further fussing or intervention required.
  • Also, unlike older versions this slow cooker does not require preheating.
  • This model is lightweight and compact. And doesn’t take up alot of countertop space.
  • Slow cooking in general is a great way to make the most of cheaper but tastier cuts of meat. As these benefit from low and slow cooking.
  • Also in general, a slow cooker is much cheaper to run than a conventional oven. Even if you have the slow cooker on for longer time. This slow cooker model has a power consumption of 163W. In comparison my fan oven runs at about 2700W.
  • And this is one of the best-rated budget (under £25) slow cookers on Amazon UK and Argos.

Cons

  • The Morphy Richards slow cooker recipe book included in the manual. Is very limited, covering just the basics. You do need to buy some slow cooker cook books, to get some good recipes to do in your slow cooker. (See below for some of my cookbook reviews).
  • There is no timer with the UK model. So you do need to be around to turn the cooker off.
  • The non-stick pot has benefits, but also does mean you have to use non-metal utensils, to avoid scratching the surface. And also be careful when washing it.
  • If you are new to slow cooking, there are quite a few things you have to do differently to conventional oven or hob cooking. In order to get the most out of your slow cooker. For example, keeping the ingredients immersed in liquid. Or making sure you don’t overfill the pot. So it is recommended that you read the manual fully before you use a slow cooker.
  • You can’t just do your current recipes in the slow cooker. They do need some tweaking to allow for the fact that steam doesn’t evaporate in the same way as hob/oven cooking.
  • And if you do open the lid to check or stir the pot. You need to add a further 15 minutes to the cooking time. To allow for the slow cooker to get back to temperature.
  • Also as the inner pot is oval, it is doesn’t really ‘fit’ on my ceramic hob. So I usually use a frying pan to brown the meat or veg, instead.

Overall

Morphy Richards Slow Cooker Review - Sear and Stew 3.5 L Slow Cooker on Amazon UK

There is a learning curve for this method of cooking. But once I had got a hang of this slow cooking method, I have found it to be an efficient, energy-saving, fuss-free, economical and easy way to cook. Especially when making big batches of stews, soups or pulses. Slow cooking in this slow cooker has been excellent.

The fact that I can also make bread and cakes completely in the slow cooker, and get them golden brown due to the metal non-stick pot, is an unexpected bonus.

If I had an electric or gas hob, I would also be able to make the most out of the Sear and Stew feature. But I can cope without that for now.

And lastly, though this model does not have a timer. It does come in below the £25 price range (UK model). So this is a very good user-friendly budget slow cooker for beginners, like me!

Overall, this slow cooker has helped me prepare from scratch, home-made meals. Doing the prep when I have “spare” time, like in the evenings. Then I can just leave it to cook overnight or through the day. Making it easy to fit in making delicious family meals into my own schedule.
